BUEN CAMINO EXTRAIT DE PARFUM

A PERFUME ABOUT CONTINUITY

Pilgrims walking Camino rely on depictions of the concha to guide them across Spain to their destination in Santiago de Compostela. My favorite version of the symbol is its most contemporary iteration—a slightly abstracted, Modernist rendering made of various bold lines that meet at a shared point before parting ways again. I have a tattoo of it on the leg that was least-injured when I returned home from my walk, and I love this particular version of it because unlike more traditional depictions that mimic a real shell, the modern icon does away with the form’s outer edges to suggest that the various paths pilgrims take to get to Santiago may in fact extend out forever—as if a pilgrimage isn’t just something you do, but rather a way that you live. 

After launching Chrontope, as Buen Camino EdP became the runaway audience favorite, I began feeling unenthused by it. I’d spent eight years on it by that point. I needed a break from it.

But it was inevitable that I’d return to Buen Camino eventually. Buen Camino Extrait de Parfum offers evidence of that return. A true extrait, its scent diverges surprisingly little from its namesake perfume—even as its formula is 100% new and 100% all-natural. This time, its formula is centered around Cambodian oud and frereana frankincense. This extrait also features a petitgrain-orange blossom-neroli complex representing the shared agriculture of Spain and my current home, Florida, in addition to San candle, real vanilla extract, hyrax, sandalwood, fenugreek, tonka bean, eucalyptus, and flouve.

There isn’t a single shared ingredient between the eau de parfum and this extrait; if I used clary sage essential oil in the other, here it’s an absolute. As the symbol concha attests to the many paths that pilgrims take to make their (our?) way to Santiago in Galicia, there are also various ways a perfumer can arrive at a perfumer…even if they only use naturals.
